Autofocus is a combination of body and lens, but in a different way for the
makers.

Canon uses an autofocus motor inside the lenses (Nikon uses this
technique in many of it's lenses, but not all of them). The Canon mount is
purely electric and has no mechanical linkage. But, it isn't the lens that does
the thinking, it's the body. The body has the AF processing unit and it controls
the lens.

Pentax system has a mechanical linkage to the lenses. The
autofocus motor is inside the body, not in the lens. But, the lenses has an
advanced chip and the autofocus system in the body relies on the information it
receives from the lens.

A difference between the Canon system and the Pentax
system, is that when the Canon system has calculated how much it needs to turn
the lens to achieve the correct exposure, and then turns the lens to that value
- it stops there. Now, here's the difference - the Pentax system checks the
focus again and make final adjustments.

This means that the Pentax system is more accurate
than the Canon system, but it is true that the Canon system is faster. Since
Pentax checks the focus twice and Canon checks the focus once, the Pentax system
needs more time to do it's thing.

In the 90's, Pentax had the
fastest autofocus of all makers - so it's not about the method (in body AF or
in-lens AF), it's about power, strength and processing speed. Canon's budget
SLR's were always slower than the high-end, even with the same lenses! Why?
Since the lenses had their own AF motor, it shouldn't be a difference between
the bodies... But it were, because the bodies had different AF processing
engines and logics. The budget SLR's from Canon had a simpler AF processning
unit, so they had slower AF than the higher-end models.

In digital SLR's Pentax has got a bad
reputation of slow autofocus, mainly because Pentax choosed a weak autofocus
motor in their budget SLR's in order to be able to sell the cameras at a low
price. (and as you now understand, Canon has done a similar thing, but in their
case it wasn't the AF motor, it was the AF processing unit that was
weak).

With the
K100D, Pentax has put in a stronger, faster autofocus motor, the AF processing
unit is also faster. This means that the K100D is faster than previous budget
DSLR's from Pentax, especially with long and heavy lenses.
